Instructions:

  1. Wash the orange under cold running water and dry it.
  2. Cut off a small slice from the top and bottom so the orange sits flat. Cut the orange in half from top to bottom, then cut each half into 3–4 wedges depending on size (aim for wedges about 1–1.5 cm thick at the widest part). Leave the white pith on each wedge as a handle for your toddler to hold.
  3. Remove any visible seeds carefully with the tip of a knife. If segments feel very slippery, gently loosen the outer membrane from the segment so the baby can bite more easily while still holding the pith handle.
  4. Offer one wedge at a time on a clean plate. Allow your child to hold and suck/gnaw on the wedge; supervise closely at all times. For younger 10–12 month toddlers, consider cutting each wedge into long finger-sized strips to make a safer grip.
  5. Serve cold or at room temperature. No added sugar, salt or spices are needed—this keeps it baby-friendly.
Summary

Fresh orange wedges prepared for baby-led weaning are an easy, cold snack for toddlers 10+ months. They offer vitamin C and encourage chewing and hand-to-mouth coordination. Keep pieces an appropriate size for your child and always supervise.

Storing

Best prepared just before serving. Leftover cut wedges can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours; texture and juiciness will decline. Discard if smell or appearance changes. Do not freeze wedges intended for immediate baby-led feeding.

Allergies & side effects

Oranges are acidic and may irritate a sensitive mouth or cause diaper rash in some babies; they can also worsen reflux. Watch for allergic signs (rash, swelling, vomiting). Remove seeds and ensure pieces are sized for your child’s chewing ability. Always supervise eating to reduce choking risk.
