Instructions:

  1. Wash the apple and strawberries under cold running water.
  2. Peel the apple if you prefer; remove core and any seeds.
  3. Cut the apple into long, thin wedges about 4–6 mm thick and 6–8 cm long so they’re easy for little hands to hold and for the child to bite off safely. If the apple is very firm, you can grate it or briefly steam (1–2 minutes) and cool before serving.
  4. Hull the strawberries and halve or quarter them depending on size so pieces are not too small—aim for pieces similar in length to the apple wedges.
  5. Arrange fruit pieces on a plate, leaving space between items so your toddler can pick them up easily. Do not add salt or sugar; avoid honey for infants under 1 year.
  6. Always have your child sitting upright and supervise closely while they are eating.
Summary

Simple, cold (no-cook) baby-led weaning snack composed of apple wedges and strawberry pieces. Suitable from around 10 months when the child can sit independently and uses fingers to grasp food. Texture should be adjusted to the child’s chewing ability (soften firm apple if needed).

Storing options

Store cut fruit in an airtight container in the fridge and use within 24 hours. Whole fruit keeps longer. If you steam or cook apple to soften, keep the cooked apple refrigerated and use within 24 hours.

Allergies & side effects

Watch for signs of allergy (rash, swelling, vomiting, breathing difficulty). Some children experience oral allergy syndrome to apples or strawberries—look for itching or tingling around the mouth. Always supervise to minimise choking risk; adjust size/softness to your child’s ability and introduce one new food at a time, monitoring for reactions over 48–72 hours.
