Instructions:

  1. Wash your hands and make sure baby is seated upright and supervised at all times.
  2. Select a ripe avocado: it should yield slightly to gentle pressure.
  3. Slice the avocado lengthwise around the pit, twist halves apart and carefully remove the pit with a spoon or by gently levering it out—never give the pit to the child.
  4. Peel the skin from each half and place the flesh on a cutting board.
  5. Cut each half into 4–6 thick wedges about 2–3 cm wide so the child can grasp them easily (thicker wedges reduce choking risk and give a good handle).
  6. Optionally, gently press the surface of a wedge with a fork to slightly soften the outer layer while keeping the wedge shape—this helps toddlers hold and gum the avocado while practicing bite and chew skills.
  7. Serve the wedges immediately at room temperature. Encourage self-feeding and watch for gagging (a normal reflex) vs. true choking—stay close and be ready to respond.
Summary

Soft, finger-sized avocado wedges are a quick, cold, baby-led weaning snack for babies 10 months and older. Avocado provides healthy fats and a smooth texture that’s easy for babies to gum and bite. No cooking or added salt is needed.

Storing

Best served fresh. If you must store, place remaining peeled avocado flesh in an airtight container with a little lemon or lime juice pressed over the surface to slow browning and refrigerate; use within 24 hours. Do not freeze wedges for serving as finger food.

Allergies & Side effects

Avocado allergy is uncommon but possible; stop feeding if you see rash, vomiting or breathing difficulty and seek medical help. Be aware of latex-fruit cross-reactivity in children with latex allergy. Always supervise to reduce choking risk, remove skin and pit, and offer appropriately sized wedges for your baby’s current chewing/grasping ability.
