Signs your baby is ready for solid foods

Introducing solid foods is an exciting milestone in your baby's growth, typically occurring around 6 months of age. However, every baby develops at their own pace. Below are the key signs of readiness that indicate your baby is prepared to start solids:

Sitting Up With Minimal Support
Your baby can sit upright in a highchair or seat with stability, which is crucial for safe swallowing.

Good Head and Neck Control
Strong head and neck control allows your baby to eat safely without choking.

Interest in Food
If your baby watches you eat, reaches for food, or opens their mouth when food is offered, it’s a sign of curiosity about solids.

Loss of Tongue-Thrust Reflex
This natural reflex causes babies to push food out of their mouths. Its disappearance is essential for swallowing solids.

Ability to Hold and Mouth Objects
The development of hand-to-mouth coordination shows your baby is ready to explore textures and flavors.

Increased Appetite
If your baby seems hungrier than usual despite frequent breast or formula feeds, it might be time to complement their diet with solids.

Important Note:
Always begin with smooth, single-ingredient foods like pureed vegetables, fruits, or iron-fortified baby cereals. Consult your pediatrician before introducing solids, especially if your baby has allergies or other medical concerns.
